We are very pleased to welcome Fashion Historian, Dr Jenny Gilbert (DeMontfort University, Leicester) for our September meeting. Jenny will share the story of the Hodson Drapers Shop, collection and archive in this colourfully illustrated and entertaining talk. The Hodson General and Fancy Drapers shop was located at 54 New Road, Willenhall. Edith Hodson was born in 1891 and opened the shop in 1920 in the front room of the Hodson family home, her younger sister Flora (born 1899) entered the business in 1927. The property was also home to their brother Edgar’s internationally successful lock making business. The Hodson Shop Collection consists of over 3,000 items of mass produced clothing (predominantly womenswear), accessories, toiletries and home wares from the period 1920-1960. The shop stock collection is accompanied by an archive of catalogues, business documentation, magazines and correspondence related to the operation of the shop. This talk will provide an introduction to the Hodson family, the shop and the contents of the collection and archive, whilst charting the development of 20th century fashionable dress and shifting roles of women during this transformative period. hodsonshopproject.com
