MODO — Music Of Distinct Origin — House & Classics Special
MODO stepped up a gear with the last party literally tearing the roof off from the upstairs room at the Dark Horse in Moseley. JIM SHAFT RYAN delivered a master class in DJing and got a 150 strong crowd dancing and grooving well into the night. A massive thank you to JIM and a huge thank you to all that attended to make it the best MODO we have ever hosted. With that in mind we decided to go back to the 90’s with a House & Classics Special to once again up the ante and give the crowd what they want.
It is with absolute pleasure that MODO introduces a party bursting at the seams with talent for our November 4th outing. Start your Bonfire weekend as you mean to go on with an enormous bang featuring top tunes and a night you will not forget. Not only have we once again secured a big name to headline for us in the form of scratch superstar MARK JARMAN, as he graces the MODO decks for the first time, but we have also managed to convince some old residents the FUNKOHOLICS, a talented DJ duo made up of residents STEVE LEWIS & MIKE GREENE who now plays under the pseudonym of MIGUEL VERDE, to come out of their back to back retirement to play a killer set chock full of old tunes you will absolutely love to hear again. But we don’t stop there, to add that extra sparkle and get you all in that party mood we introduce a first time comer in the form of über talented percussionist CARYS MATIC, who will be playing drums, bongos, congas and everything else she can get her hands on, live over the DJ’s, to make it an acoustically unique experience. A huge welcome to MARK JARMAN & CARYS MATIC as they join the MODO family and a warm welcome back to the FUNKOHOLICS and in particular STEVE LEWIS.
As if all that wasn’t all enough, we also have our resident MIGUEL VERDE on hand who will be serving up a rare but not to be missed warm up set from 9pm, showcasing his unique take on deep house, all to set the tone perfectly for the main event.
MODO is going from strength to strength and this monster line up is certain to continue the trend. We always operate a FREE ENTRANCE policy but this month as a special favour to our headliner Mark, we are operating a PAY WHAT YOU FEEL policy on the door which will be donated in it’s entirety to the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION. Mark is a keen ambassador of the HEART FOUNDATION alongside many other charities and has even agreed to donate his entire DJ fee for the night to the foundation as well. That kind gesture gets a huge thumbs up from us at MODO and makes us even more proud to welcome him along.
INTRODUCING OUR LINE UP
Mark started DJing way back in the late 80’s and was heavily involved in the warehouse rave scene from it early beginnings. He then moved his skills into the club scene where he quickly became very popular across the UK and abroad. He was first spotted DJ’ing at the legendary Marco Polo Bar that used to run after all the clubs had finished at 6am until everyone dropped. The venue launched many of the top names including “Steve Lawler”, “Scott Bond” and “Andy Ward” to name but a few. He then went on to DJ at many of the UK’s biggest clubs and spent a Lot of time playing around the world.
Mark has a very distinctive style and loves the crowd interaction which means you can guarantee it will always be a massive party when he plays. He fully believes that a DJ is there to entertain the crowd and is not just there to play music with their heads down.
Mark was one of the first DJ’s to incorporate scratching into his sets and this made him very popular in the UK, with his abilities to do something or mix something that no one would have expected. He was renowned for his happy bouncy style through the nineties and was huge on the dance scene for over 20 years.
Mark had decided to retire from DJ’ing but after 2 life threatening health scares over the last 2 years but he changed his mind as he knew his bookings could raise money to the charities that supported him during his illness. He donates his money to the British Heart foundation amongst others. The future is looking bright again with his style of making sure the whole event has a party.
STEVE LEWIS & MIKE GREENE aka MIGUEL VERDE
The Funkoholics duo of Steve Lewis and Mike Greene started life as college mates back in the 90’s. They quickly purchased their first turntables and before long were keen to break out onto the scene. Their style worked perfectly back to back bringing their funky sound to such clubs as HIDDEN, 52 DEGREES NORTH, ARCABAR and THE MOON LOUNGE. Mike went on to forge his solo career under the pseudonym of Miguel Verde but we are so happy to have them back together for a special one off set. Expect classics from the 90’s and funky house that will remind you of where it all began.
CARYS MATIC — PERCUSSION
Carys has performed in the UK, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, & Laos & I've played Shambala, Boomtown, & the Gwangju World Music festival. Her percussive style flows perfectly over the top of DJ sets with her unrivalled understanding of music, which makes for an unforgettable experience. Carys is also affiliated with Millennium Jazz Music. We are thrilled to finally secure a live percussionist to add that extra something and get the crowd going for what is set to be a night to remember.
MODO has a family of fans that bring warmth and happiness to their events and we are very proud of what we have created over the past 4 years. Expect a fun uplifting atmosphere with a passion for music, presenting the most talented performers from around the city. We welcome anyone that wishes to attend and become a part of what will certainly be a MODO to remember.
