Artefact is very proud to present our first show of 2018: English Gothic.
English Gothic is a new series of paintings by Birmingham based artist Paul Newman. The works imaginatively combine motifs and reference points from 18th & 19th-century landscapes with 20th-century industry, architecture and Gothic horror. These references create a tableau, the figurative elements become props in a stage, a landscape in flux.
The imagery is heavily biographical drawing from various memories throughout Newman's life. Newman's fathers white Ford Escort van, the Salisbury wing in the national gallery, rural walks. The work may generate political and cultural themes around relics of heritage and urban/rural environment.
Doors open from 7.30pm until 10.30pm. English Gothic by Paul Newman will be on show until Saturday 3rd February.
