It is 1959. Philippe, Gustave and Henri, three First World War veterans dream of escaping from the Soldiers’ Home where they now live. If they can’t make it to Indochina, at least they’ll try for the poplars on the hill …
The three of them pass their time on the terrace at the rear of the home, and guard their territory jealously.
They are three very different characters.
Phillipe, neurotic, with health problems which cause him to pass out at regular intervals. He is convinced that Sister Madeleine, one of the nuns who run the home, is systematically poisoning the inmates according to some plan of her own.
Gustave is caustic and ironic. He appears to boss the others about, in spite of lacking the courage to venture outside the grounds of the home.
Henri is lame, and needs to use a walking stick. He is the most sensitive and romantic of the three. He does venture outside the grounds on occasion.
These give a flavour of the humour of the play, and the character of the three man. The auditions will be a straightforward reading. No-one will be required to learn passages.
