In the Taoist tradition, the theory goes, that we need yin and yang in balance. Yang relates to movement, creating heat in the body. Yin is about finding stillness and cooling the body. So if you want to calm the mind and stretch the body, yin yoga is the class for you.
With no planks, sun salutations or warriors,a yin class consists of passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body—the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine and are held for longer periods of time. Yin yoga works by stretching the connective tissue and offers many benefits:
Calms and balances the mind and body
Reduces stress and anxiety
Improves joint mobility
Balances the internal organs and improves the flow of chi or prana through meridian stimulation
