First performed by The National Theatre at The Old Vic in July 1973, Equus was described as “the most shocking play of its day”
When a deranged boy, Alan Strang, blinds six horses with a metal spike, he is sentenced to psychiatric treatment. Martin Dysart is the man given the task of uncovering what happened on the night Strang committed his crime, but in doing so, will open up his own wounds and insecurities.

Performances will take place from 30th June to 7th July 2018 in the Ron Barber Studio and rehearsals will begin on Sunday 29th April.

The characters in the play are:-
Martin Dysart – a psychiatrist

Alan Strang
Frank Strang – his father
Dora Strang – his mother

Hester Salomon – a magistrate
Jill Mason
Harry Dalton – a stable owner
A nurse

The play also requires six actors, including one who plays a Young Horseman and Nugget, who appear as horses.
These roles are available to both male and female actors, and in performance would require an element of physical theatre. These actors perform a function similar to that of a Chorus in Greek drama.

A brief familiarisation will be followed by auditions on Sunday 22nd April at 2.00pm and Tuesday 24th April at 7.30pm. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at these sessions.
In the pivotal scene of the play, the characters of Alan and Jill are required to appear nude. Please contact me if you are interested in these roles and wish to discuss what is required, or if you have any concerns.

The following sections of the text will be used for auditions and can be downloaded from the auditions page of the Crescent website:-
Act 1 – Section 13 – pp 48-49 — Alan
Act 1 – Section 7 – pp 33-35 — Dysart/Dora/Frank
Act 1 – Section 12 – pp 46-47 — Dalton/Dysart
Act 1 – Section 2 – pp 19-21 — Hester/Dysart
Act 1 – Section 16 – pp 56-57 — Jill/Dalton

If you are interested in auditioning but cannot make the 22nd or 24th April, please contact me at [email protected] and I will try to arrange to see you at another time.
Many thanks,
Stewart Snape, Director.
